1.  We should not buy any new goods or items during these 16 days Pitru Paksha.
2. Do not perform any auspicious activity apart from Shradh.  Activity like House warming or mundan or birthday celebration must be avoided. 
3. Avoid any other kind of pujas.
4. The person who is performing the rituals must not cut his hairs or nails during these 16 days.
5. The person who is performing the ritual must follow brahmacharya and avoid any activity that may disrespect our ancestors.
6. The person should eat less, talk polietly , not lie.
7. We should do Pind dan from our own house because during this day our ancestors will come to there real house so we must do pind daan from there. If we do this from our own house then only our ancestors soul will benifit from this.
8. During this time avoid eating any kind of non vegetarian food.
9. Person who is performing the ritual must avoid wearing chappals or slippers. The ancestors might feel they are disrespected.
10. During this period our ancestors come to earth to bless us. So we must do everything so that there return journey to heaven is without any problem.

How to do Pitru Paksha puja at home?

We can perform Pitru Paksha Puja at home by following simple steps. The eldest son of the family has to wake up early in the morning. He has to take bath early morning. To perform Pitru Paksha Puja at home the eldest son has to wear a dhoti and remain bare chested. Rice, sessame seed  and barley balls which are cooked in ghee are prepared for our ancestors. This food is offered to our ancestors. While offering the food to our ancestors the person has to read Vishnu and Yama Mantras.
